Millions of Americans take prescription and over the counter medications, and use medical devices to aid in the treatment of various medical conditions, such as diabetes, psoriasis, and infections.
Millions of Americans are also prescribed dangerous drugs to prevent pregnancy and to stop smoking.
Several medications prescribed to treat these illnesses or prevent pregnancy, have been making headline news in recent months, as the result of recalls and warnings regarding the serious health risks, and side effects associated with their use.
The following drugs have either been recalled or warnings have been issued regarding the serious side effects and risks that they pose:
- Chantix - is manufactured by Pfizer and is intended to help people stop smoking. On July 1, 2009, the FDA ordered Pfizer to place a black box warning on the drug's label. The warning informed physicians to the risk of suicidal behavior and adverse psychological reactions on the part of Chantix users.
- Raptiva - is a drug that was manufactured by Genentech to treat psoriasis. Raptiva was pulled from the market in April, 2009 because it caused a rare brain infection PML (Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy). Raptiva has also been linked to other serious infections such as viral meningitis, sepsis, bacterial brain infections, and cancers such as lymphoma.
- Yaz - is a popular birth control pill, manufactured by Bayer, that has been linked to several adverse reactions, such as heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, gall bladder disease, and pancreatitis.
- Avandia - is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and marketed to treat type-II (non-insulin dependent) diabetes. Since 2007, Avandia has been linked to heart attacks, congestive heart failure, ischemic stroke, or macular edema.
- Levaquin - Levaquin is a widely-prescribed antibiotic that was introduced in 1991 by Johnson & Johnson. The FDA ordered Johnson & Johnson to add a warning label to reflect the increased risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture.
